Common Law and Civil Law Tracks
IMPORTANT NOTICE: All students entering school in Fall 2023 are required to take two (2) clinical courses prior to the completion of their studies. While the current matriculation paths in this Catalog do not reflect this new requirement, the Catalog will be updated during your first semester of school to indicate how your matriculation paths will be impacted by this new requirement. This statement serves as notice of the new requirement.
While SULC has established its various divisions (FTD, PTD, PTE) to accommodate the unique needs of its student population, SULC has also established additional alternatives to complete the demanding course work of its program. Recognizing that some students will remain in Louisiana upon graduation and others will move onto common law jurisdictions, SULC has created two tracks under which its program of legal education can be completed. The civil law track is designed for students who intend to practice law in Louisiana upon graduation. The common law track is designed for those students who intend to practice law outside of Louisiana upon graduation. While a student is permitted to switch tracks after the commencement of their studies, there are limitations on when such a switch can take place and there will be additional course requirements placed upon a student who makes such a switch. It is important to note a student completing either track will be prepared to take and pass any bar exam in the country. However, the tracks are designed to better prepare a student for a particular exam.
