Master’s of Business Administration Dual Degree
In collaboration between SULC and the Southern University and A&M College Baton Rouge, College of Business (SUBR COB), students can enroll in a dual degree that allows them to earn the J.D. and the M.B.A. degrees concurrently. Students are permitted to obtain both degrees to increase students’ job opportunities by providing them with knowledge of administrative processes necessary for attorneys pursuing careers in business and not-for-profit institutions, with specialized proficiency in fields auxiliary to law, such as banking, finance, investments, accounting, taxation, marketing, and real estate, and with knowledge of the economic implications of the legal process.
The course of study will involve full-time students earning both degrees in four years, and part-time students obtaining both degrees in either 4 ½ or 5 years. The matriculation period for obtaining the dual degree may also be extended if the J.D. student is later enrolled in any one of SULC’s intervention courses while in law school. Students will take classes in both SULC and SUBR COB in their second, third and fourth year of legal studies at SULC. At the end of the fourth year, students who have earned a minimum of 84 credit hours at SULC and 36 credit hours at the SUBR COB MBA Program and who have satisfied all other requirements for graduation at both schools will be awarded the J.D. degree from SULC and M.B.A. degree from the SUBR COB.
Each interested law student must submit a separate application for admission to the Southern University Graduate School. SULC and SUBR COB, in accordance with their own respective admissions policies, will independently admit each candidate for participation in this dual degree curriculum.
Before beginning the application process, interested J.D. students will need to have completed all foundation courses before entering the J.D./M.B.A. curriculum. Listed below are the foundation courses for the M.B.A. program:
Survey of Management & Marketing
Foundations of Quantitative Methods
Foundations of Economics & Finance
Survey of Accounting
SULC students may apply to be admitted into this curriculum during the spring semester of their first year of law school by submitting a statement to the Records and Registration Department in both SULC and SUBR Graduate School. The statement of interest and the application must be submitted no later than the final date to apply for admission to the graduate school for the next academic term.
Students who are admitted into the J.D./M.B.A. curriculum may begin taking graduate-level courses in the summer semester before their second year of law school. Graduate admission test requirements may be provisionally waived by the Graduate Admissions Department depending on either the J.D. student’s LSAT score or their grade point average following their first semester of legal studies. SULC will monitor the graduate-level courses that J.D. students are enrolled in during each semester. SULC has implemented the following course schedule listed below for both its full-time and part-time law students who enter its J.D./M.B.A. curriculum.
